Book Jacket Synopsis:

Connected is what we are: part of a worldwide community, diverse and magnificent, kind and accepting, supportive and present. All of us important, none of us alone.

Sometimes we may wonder, how does caring for ourselves help anyone else? But then we realize that the better we feel inside, the more we can be there for others—our friends, families, and communities. We are part of something bigger than ourselves, and when we each turn our goodness and compassion outward, we can create, learn, and love.

From the New York Times bestselling tem behind the I Am series, comes a celebration of caring for ourselves AND others with open hearts and minds. Whether it’s listening to a friend, welcoming newcomers with open arms, or standing up against injustice, I Am We shows us what true community looks like — and the amazing things that can happen when we come together.

My thoughts:

Susan Verde has written an inspiring and contemplative picture book for children that is a beautiful celebration of life. It is uplifting and will touch the hearts of both children and adults as it encourages readers to develop empathy towards themselve and others. Peter H. Reynolds colorful and whimsical illustrations will draw readers deeply into the story and resonate with a global audience.

I am thrilled with this latest addition to the I Am series for many reasons. I Am We is an important and timely book for a world that offers many unknowns right now. First of all, It encourages young children to take care of themselves and their own needs first before they reach out to support others. It is important for kids to feel good about themseves and find their own inner beauty and joy, so they can genuinely care about family and friends. I love the notion that when there are difficulties, we can be a safety net for each other.

“When there is hurtfulness and inequity,

we can stand up for each other.

We can sit, gather, march, sing, vote, stronger in numbers,

louder in voices, as we call for justice.”

The children of the world are diverse and have more opportunities than we did as children. Thanks to the internet they can share their creativity and talents, so they can solve problems and celebrate the results. Readers will resonate with the story and enjoy the journey.

Resources: Parents and teachers, make sure you read the Author’s Note where Verde shares exercises to help kids work on themselves and build community.
